Iraq: Taking Responsiblity for Peace Making

The Iraqi people are again demonstrating wisdom and resiliency as they attempt to form a framework that encourages peace, in spite of the provocations from various violence mongerers.

Over 800 tribal chiefs have unaminously signed a pact of honour pledging to support the Iraqi prime minister's national reconciliation plan to wipe out sectarian violence and terrorism that has been tearing the country apart.

Al-Malaki spoke to the conference and commented that "The liberation of the nation is not possible without the existence of a national consensus".

The national reconciliation plan provides a concrete means to ensuring territorial integrity and national unity. "The most important of these recommendations, according to Sheikh al-Majoun, include 'a cessation of sectarian hostilities and forced displacements, the disbanding of militias, reinforcing the role of the judiciary and the rule of law, supporting the role of the state, and the formation of united national armed forces to take over from the multinational forces in Iraq.'"

This is an excellent development from the first national reconciliation meeting held in Babel last week and first noted in Alsumaria and NewsBlaze. This meeting had noted that there are no winners in war, and Iraqis all have a shared interest in restoring their country.
